Westbury 71
With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Westbury's Darius Young hit two consecutive three pointers to give the Dragons a six point lead and hold off the Jets as they attempted to reach the semi-finals of the AA playoffs. With three minutes left in the third quarter, the Jets built their lead up to ten points and an upset of the #2 team in the County and #9 team ranked on Long Island appeared to be in the makings.
The Jets should be commended on an outstanding season which was topped off by a tremendous effort in the final game. Tom Zitzmann led the Jets with a career high of 24 points, while J.R. Howell poured in 16 points and played a magnificent floor game. Joe Minucci added 11 points while Austin Birnbaum chipped in 10 points and for the 8h straight game finished with double digit rebounds. Junior Center Will Ayers once again played fantastic defense drawing four charges over the course of the game.
Although disappointed with the outcome, all 14 members of the East Meadow Varsity basketball team should be proud of their efforts this year. The Jets were predicted to finish last in their conference in a preseason poll, and ended in up in the Elite 8 of Nassau County basketball, and were two minutes away from advancing to the final four. This team demonstrated what teamwork and effort can accomplish on a basketball court.
